Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system offers a lot of compelling features, including Cortana and a new Start menu. However, some of its default settings don't provide you with the best performance or usability. From showing file extensions to enabling system protection backups, here are seven things you need to change as soon as you get started with Windows 10 after you've properly set up the operating system.

Enable System Protection / Create a Restore Point

What happens if you install a bad piece of software or a defective driver and your computer starts acting strangely or you can't even boot. You'll want to revert Windows 10 to the previous system restore point, which will turn back the clock on your drivers, programs and settings to a time when the system worked perfectly. However, Windows 10 comes with system protection disabled. If you want to protect yourself -- and you should -- set up restore points following the instructions below.

Search for "restore point" in the Windows search box

Launch "Create a restore point" from the results. You should see a list of available drives.

Select the system drive and click Configure. The system drive is usually the C: drive and has the word "(System)" written after its volume name.

Toggle Restore Settings to "Turn on system protection," set the maximum disk space usage by moving the slider and click Ok. We recommend leaving 2 or 3 percent for restore pints but you may be able to get away with the lowest (1 percent

Click Create so that you create an initial restore point right away.

Name the initial restore point when prompted.

Click Close when it is done.



Show File Extensions and Hidden Files

By default, Windows 10 hides most file extensions so, when you're browsing through your files, you can't easily see what type of file they are. Your quarterly report, for example, will appear as "3dqreport" instead of "3dqreport.pptx" while that web page you saved will display as "homepage" rather than "homepage.htm" or "homepage.html."

Microsoft has been disabling extensions by default for the past several versions of its OS in a misguided effort to simplify the file system for users. However, this approach can create more problems than it solves. For example, I recently ran into a problem when linking to a font file because I referenced it as "myfont.ttf" when the hidden extension was in caps and the real name was "myfont.TTF." 

In an effort to protect you from yourself, Microsoft also hides certain operating system files from you by default. But what if you need to find these files or edit them to troubleshoot? And can't you trust yourself not to delete important files?  Here's how to show extensions and hidden files in Windows 10.

Motherboard beeps

If your PC gets so far and no further, and you find it beeps at you and shuts down before Windows even starts loading, the problem is at a lower level. Motherboards will alert you to what's gone wrong by the number of beeps -- check the user manual to find out what they mean, or look for a digital copy on the manufacturer's website.

The labyrinthine settings file that is the Windows registry can cause errors, program crashes and system restarts if something has gone wrong deep within it. There are plenty of third-party tools that will scan it for problems for you, though not all of them are trustworthy -- Glary Registry Repair is one of the ones you can depend on (though as with any advanced tweaking tool, use at your own risk -- you do back up, right?).

How to Test the hard drive

Modern hard drives have something known as SMART (Self Monitoring And Reporting Technology) built into them. It's a standardised technology the disks use to report their status and general health back to Windows. Plenty of free applications can read and report this SMART data -- HDD Health is one example, which also supports SSD drives -- and they will display warning signs if you need to buy a replacement drive in the near future

4 How to fix Internet Problem

Find the fault

First step: find where the problem is. Check if you can connect to the web on other computers and devices. Ideally plug a laptop into the router directly and run the router's built-in testing diagnostics -- your ISP may be experiencing issues. If there's only one PC that can't get online, there's likely to be a problem with its network adaptor or settings.

Adaptor problems

If you suspect the adaptor is to blame (a wireless USB dongle, for example), check the hardware tips above. Try updating the adaptor's driver, uninstalling and reinstalling, or simply plugging it in another USB port

Update firmware

It's possible there's a firmware update for the router that you're using, though some ISPs frown on users taking this much control over their network setup. The best place to start looking is the customer forums for your ISP, where you should find details of which free router you've been lumbered with and how you can update its firmware.

Reboots all round

The reboot process is something of a troubleshooting cliche, but that's because it often works -- turn the router off for 30-60 seconds to re-establish the connection and reset the router. Reboot your PC for good measure to attempt to connect again.

5 Network management

Delve into the Network and Sharing Centre in Windows to make sure there aren't multiple programs trying to manage your wireless connection. Laptop manufacturers will often bundle their own network management software with their machines, which is fine as long as these applications aren't trying to work concurrently with Windows' own utilities.

Browser woes

Switching to an alternative browser is a simple way to test if your Internet-related problems are being caused by your favourite browser. If the browser is to blame, try some of the software tips I mentioned earlier, and take a long hard look at the plug-ins and extensions.

 Firewall settings

Firewalls can be temperamental and might be blocking the site, service or program you're trying to use. Consult the incoming and outgoing settings when you've found them (if you're using the Windows Firewall, head to Control Panel). If you're struggling to get online with a particular game or networking tool, you might find instructions for allowing firewall access in the supplied documentation.

View connections

Head into the Network and Sharing Centre to make sure your PC is trying to connect using the right connection (wireless versus wired, for example). While all of this should configure itself automatically, rogue programs or security tools can make changes they shouldn't. There are also some troubleshooters built into the Network and Sharing Centre, which are surprisingly useful

Is it down?

If you're having issues with a particular site, look it up on -- the problem may not be at your end. Note that if something large scale suffers a failure -- like Amazon's S3 storage -- it can affect many different sites and services at once.

6 Slowdowns


PC owners should regularly clean their registry, empty cache files and update software. Five-year-old machines are typically still in good order if diligent maintenance is done. Generally, a visit to Start/Accessories/System Tools (in Windows XP) does the trick. Disk cleanup and disk defragmentation usually take a few hours and are well worth the down time. The tools needed to check your system (computer management and system performance) are under Administrative Tools.




Perform a few diagnostic steps to clean up spyware, which causes many system lockups. There are shareware anti-spy programs on the market that load the basic software onto your PC for free and have premium upgrades for a charge. Three reputable programs are Ad-aware, Cyber Patrol and Spybot

Freeze and Crash

When your computer cannot find an updated driver, it will lock up and freeze. Hardware drivers should be updated on a regular basis. It also helps to augment your computer's RAM by increasing your PC's virtual memory

Blue Screens


Hardware issues can also cause computer problems. Attribute these problems to fading power supplies or defective parts, including cooling fans. Keep the fan cleaned and make sure all cables and plugs are tightly connected. If all of this fails, see the "Blue Death Screen" resource below

Clicking Sounds


This is another hardware issue. Noises like clicking, squealing, whirling or whining might come from damaged electronic components. Remove the computer case and let the computer run to see if you can find the problem. Save yourself some money and fix it yourself if you can, but your best bet is to call a technical expert if you're not confident with internal computer repair.

SSDs have a clear advantage with faster access through the PCIe serial bus standard. NVMe was built from scratch as a new way to efficiently access storage devices that are specifically built with non-volatile (flash) memory – SSDs. NVMe enables a faster interface for leveraging the speeds that SSDs are capable of. As SSDs began to replace slower Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) in computers as primary storage, a new interface was needed to make use of the faster speed capability. However, in the transition to SSD, some PCs have been outfitted with an SSD that is accessed through interfaces historically used with slower HDDs, such as Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) and Serial ATA (SATA). It makes more sense to use NVMe with an SSD.

SSD is already the primary source of storage for smartphones and tablets. SSDs are presently more expensive than HDDs, and often used as memory cache in conjunction with HDDs to speed up computer systems. SSDs have no moving parts and in many ways are more rugged than HDDs.


NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) is an interface protocol built especially for Solid State Drives (SSDs). NVMe works with PCI Express (PCIe) to transfer data to and from SSDs. NVMe enables rapid storage in computer SSDs and is an improvement over older Hard Disk Drive (HDD) related interfaces such as SATA and SAS. The only reason SATA and SAS are used with SSDs in computers is that until recently, only slower HDDs have been used as the large-capacity storage in computers. Flash memory has been used in mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, USB drives and SD cards. (SSDs are flash memory.)

Officially, NVMe is an optimized “scalable host controller interface designed to address the needs of Enterprise, Data Center and Client systems that utilize PCI Express (PCIe) based solid state drives.”


How Does NVMe work

For NVMe, the complicated-sounding “Submission and Completion Queue” is one mechanism that takes advantage of SSD technology. The Queue’s host software manages and controls SSD data flow, creates and deletes separate queues, aborts commands, and so forth. A computer with four cores might have four queue pairs to ensure that the data structures are kept in the corresponding core’s cache (see Figure 1). NVMe supports several deep, independent queues
